BLM Challenges Kamala Harris' Coronation: Demanding Democracy in DNC's Nomination Process
Yesterday Black Lives Matter released a statement on Vice-President Kamala Harris securing enough delegates to become the Democratic Nominee.
Based on the press release, Black Lives Matter's main criticisms of the Democratic Party are:
1. Lack of democratic process: BLM accuses the DNC of attempting to install Kamala Harris as the nominee without a proper public voting process following President Biden stepping aside.
2. Suppression of debates: The DNC refused to host debates during the primary, which BLM argues could have revealed Biden's decline earlier.
3. Manipulation of primary rules: The DNC changed the primary schedule and created rules that made it difficult for non-Biden candidates to appear on the ballot.
4. Disregard for voter input: After millions of Black voters participated in the primary, party elites and donors pressured Biden to leave the race after one poor debate performance.
5. Lack of transparency: BLM argues there's no clarity on where Kamala Harris stands on issues now that she's assumed Biden's place, nor is there information about her potential running mate.
6. Hypocrisy on democracy: While the Democratic Party has been vocal about protecting democracy from Republicans, BLM accuses them of undermining democratic principles within their party.
7. Taking Black voters for granted: BLM claims the Democratic Party has consistently prioritized political theatrics over addressing the real needs of the Black community.
8. Potential delegitimization: BLM argues that installing Harris without a public nomination process could undermine her presidency and be labeled as affirmative action or a DEI move.
To address these issues, BLM calls for the DNC to host an informal, virtual snap primary to ensure a democratic selection process for the nominee.
